The
Office of Sheriff
In
North Carolina there are 100 counties and each has a Sheriff as the
chief law enforcement official elected by mandate of the people. The
Sheriff is solely responsible for the execution of all state laws and
civil process within the respective county.
The
Sheriff enforces criminal laws, attends to the security of the County
Courts, and is the keeper of all persons imprisoned in the county
jails. He maintains law and order and must see that due process of law,
as guaranteed by the Constitution, is complied with before any person is
deprived of life, liberty or property.
The
Sheriff is a guardian of public peace, safety and security. As a Constitutional
Officer, he has the authority to extend his powers to individuals whom
he deputizes and who assist him in carrying out his work.
Mission
Statement
Our
mission is to maintain a high quality of life for all residents and
visitors of Cleveland county, providing a competent and
professional law enforcement service, while working in
partnership with our citizens to develop policing services to meet the
unique needs of the community while assuring fairness, equal treatment
and protection to all.
Organizational
Structure
The Sheriff is supported by a Chief Deputy, a civilian
Administrative Assistant, and four Division Captains. These Divisions
include Uniformed Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Administration and
Detention Center.
These
Divisions Captains are supported by Lieutenants, Sergeants,
Corporals and non-ranking sworn and civilian personnel.
