If you live outside of our service area, you can submit a research request at this link. Our ability to fill these requests depends on the time and resources needed.
The North Carolina Room is located at the Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library and contains materials of all types to assist you in your genealogical research.

The following materials are included in our collection:

  • Shelby Star Newspaper on microfilm: 1902 – Present (~3 month delay in receiving microfilm)
  • Cleveland County records on microfilm:
    • Survey of Cleveland County Cemeteries

  • Census Information
  • Some records of Lincoln County, Rutherford County, and upper South Carolina

Your first 5 black and white copies per day are free. Additional copies cost $0.15 per page.

Please Note: The North Carolina Room is available for use at your own pace. Limitations in staffing and funding prevent us from doing extensive genealogical research, but we are happy to provide the space and resources for your search.

Rules for use of the North Carolina Room:

  • Food and drink are not permitted
  • The North Carolina Room is a temperature and humidity-controlled environment to protect the integrity of delicate materials. The room is cold; the library recommends that users bring a jacket.
  • Please wash your hands before beginning your research, and use the cotton gloves provided if you are handling photographs.
  • Non-flash photography is permitted. If a scan or copy is desired, the staff member on hand will make them for you.
  • Do not bring any items from the general collection into the North Carolina Room and do not remove any North Carolina Collection items from the North Carolina Room.
  • Marking of the pages, cracking book spines, dogearing pages, stapling or paperclipping archive materials, and similar damage to the items is not permitted. Scraps of paper will be available to save places; these will be removed when your visit is complete.
