Applying for a Marriage License

Couples wishing to be issued a marriage license need to complete the application on-line prior to coming into our office. Licenses are by appointment.  *** Please call 704-484-4834 to make an appointment***  

Due to COVID and social distances, we only are allowing the couple obtaining a marriage license in the office.

Application Requirement

  • ID Requirement: Valid* State Driver’s License, State ID card or Passport. 
  • Social Security: Applicants will need to provide their full Social Security number, i.e. Social Security Card, W-2 form, payroll stub, or a statement from the Social Security Office stating their Social Security number.  If a Social Security number has never been issued the applicant will be required to sign a sworn affidavit at the time of applying for the marriage license.
  • Signing the License: Both parties to a marriage must appear in person to obtain the license.
  • Residency Requirement: Do not have to be a resident of North Carolina.
  • Fees: $60 - Cash or Card (Card must have chip).  Information regarding how the fee is distributed, per NC General Statutes:  $5.00  Children's Trust Fund & $30 Domestic Violence Fund.
  • If Previously Married: If the bride or groom have been previously married, he or she must provide the month and year the marriage ended. They must also provide a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate if marriage ended within the last 5 years.
  • Under 18: Applicants 16 and 17 must have a parent present to sign. A certified copy of the birth certificate is also required. 

*Valid: License is valid for 60 days. The license can be used in any county within the State of N.C.

Once the couple is married, both signed copies must be returned to the COUNTY WHERE THE LICENSE WAS ISSUED.
