Boards

The Cleveland County Planning Department oversees three Commissioner appointed Boards; the Planning Board, the Board of Adjustment, and the Historical Preservation Commission.

Planning Board

The Planning Board is an advisory board to the Board of Commissioners. This Board advises on land use policy and makes recommendations on cases involving rezoning or amendments to the Cleveland County Unified Development Ordinance. The Planning Board also approves/denies road name change requests.

The Planning Board is made up of seven members, each nominated to fill a three (3) year term. The Planning Board meets on the last Tuesday of every month, as needed. The meetings are open and can be attended by any citizen.

Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment is a Quasi-Judicial Board appointed by the Board of Commissioners. This Board acts much like a panel of judges, hearing evidence and rendering decisions on Conditional Use Permits, Variances, and administrator appeals.

The Board of Adjustment is made up of five permanent members and two alternates, each nominated to fill a three (3) year term. The Board of Adjustment meets on the last Thursday of every month, as needed. The meetings are open and can be attended by any citizen.

Historical Preservation Commission

The Historical Preservation Commission is established by the Board of Commissioners to protect and preserve local resources. They accomplish this by recommending properties to be designated as historic local landmarks, areas to be recommended as historic districts, approving or disapproving change requests on locally designated property and advising on preservation planning.

The Historical Preservation Commission is made up of nine members; four municipal seats, four county jurisdiction seats, and the Historic Shelby Foundation president. The eight appointed board members serve a four year term. The Historical Preservation Commission meets on the second Wednesday of every month, as needed. The meetings are open and can be attended by any citizen.
