County Nurses Receive Statewide Award

Two Cleveland County Public Health Center Nurses Receive Distinguished NC Public Health Nurse Award

SHELBY, NC – – 2019 marks 100 years of the Office of Public Health Nursing in North Carolina. In an effort to celebrate the centennial year of public health nursing in our state, the NC Public Health Association selected 100 public health nurses from across the state who demonstrate noteworthy evidence of Innovation, Collaboration, Community Centered Care, or Professionalism in their work setting.

The Cleveland County Public Health Center is pleased to share that two of our nurses, Jill Cogdill, RN, BSN and Tiffany Hudson, RN, BSN, were selected as recipients of the 100 Distinguished Public Health Nurses in North Carolina award. Selected by a review committee of eight professional peers from across the state, being a recipient of this award demonstrates that these nurses stand out as leaders in North Carolina’s public health workforce. Being selected is a tremendous distinction as this award will be given only once as part of the 100 Years of the Office of Public Health Nursing in NC celebrations.

Public Health Nurses are vital to our communities. As the largest public health profession, nurses demonstrate leadership in helping to promote and protect the public’s health by:

  • Preventing illness and the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Educating individuals, communities, and stakeholders on ways to make the healthy choice the easy choice.
  • Coordinating care.
  • Protecting people through preparedness education.
  • Leading evidence based quality care, policy change, and transdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Promoting health equity as a shared value through individual and community engagement and inclusion.
  • Advocating for community assets that lead to healthier communities.
  • Caring for people, families, and communities.
  • Integrating care across physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.
  • Using and performing research to improve the health of individuals, families, and communities. (RWJF Public Health Nurse Leaders, 2017).

“Having two public health nurses from our agency receive this award demonstrates that we employ high-quality public health nursing leaders to support our commitment to protect and promote the health of Cleveland County residents,” says Alisa Leonard, Director of Nursing, Cleveland County Public Health Center. “Our public health nurses truly have a passion for helping others and serving our community, and this award helps demonstrate that.”
