Cleveland County Solid Waste Decal Program Discontinued

SHELBY,
N.C.– As part of the FY 23-24 budget, Cleveland County Government made the decision to discontinue the Solid Waste Decal Program.

The initiative was designed to be a two-year pilot program. It was introduced in July 2021 and went into effect in October to ensure collection sites are reserved for the sole use of Cleveland County residents whose tax dollars pay for the solid waste program. In July 2021, the county mailed two window decals to residents.  Decals were to be placed in the windshields of vehicles when dropping off trash at convenience sites. The decals expired on September 1, 2023.

“It was a pilot program that had high success in the beginning,” said Josh Davis, Solid Waste Director. “With the limited staff at our convenience site locations, it has proven difficult to enforce. Employees will continue to monitor the use of convenience sites by out-of-county residents and educate those who are not in compliance.”

Cleveland County Solid Waste Division consists of two landfills and seven convenience centers across the county. The Self-McNeilly and Airport Road landfill hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. All convenience center hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.
